Residual Nilpotence for Generalizations of Pure Braid Groups

It is known that the pure braid groups are residually torsion-free nilpotent. This property is however widely open for the most obvious generalizations of these groups, like pure Artin groups and like fundamental groups of hyperplane complements (even reflection ones). In this paper we relate this problem to the faithfulness of linear representations, and prove the residual torsion-free nilpote...

Finite Vertex Algebras and Nilpotence

I show that simple finite vertex algebras are commutative, and that the Lie conformal algebra structure underlying a reduced (= without nilpotent elements) finite vertex algebra is nilpotent.

Derivations and bounded nilpotence index

We construct a nil ring R which has bounded index of nilpotence 2, is Wedderburn radical, and is commutative, and which also has a derivation δ for which the differential polynomial ring R[x; δ] is not even prime radical. This example gives a strong barrier to lifting certain radical properties from rings to differential polynomial rings. It also demarcates the strength of recent results about ...

Unification and Matching Modulo Nilpotence

We consider equational uniication and matching problems where the equational theory contains a nilpotent function, i.e., a function f satisfying f(x;x) = 0 where 0 is a constant. Nilpotent matching and uniication are shown to be NP-complete. In the presence of associativity and commutativity, the problems still remain NP-complete. But when 0 is also assumed to be the unity for the function f, t...

Two-sided Essential Nilpotence

An ideal I of a ring A is essentially nilpotent if I contains a nilpotent ideal N of A such that J 91N # 0 whenever J is a nonzero ideal of A contained in I. We show that each ring A has a unique largest essentially nilpotent ideal EN(A). We study the properties of EN(A) and, in particular, we investigate how this ideal behaves with respect to related rings.
